YMCA Swimathon Shoot

Did a quick shoot for the people at YMCA who a promoting a great cause- The YMCA is calling on Australians to register for the 2015 YMCA Swimathon held at YMCA pools across Australia on Sunday 1 March. The YMCA Swimathon encourages people of all ages and abilities to dive in and swim laps to help prevent the potential for drowning incidents – particularly amongst people with a disability - an often underfunded and under-resourced area when it comes to swimming schools and education. As part of the YMCA Swimathon, swimmers will take to their local participating pool between 11am and 12pm on Sunday 1 March, raising money to support people with disabilities by giving them the chance to learn vital swimming and water safety skills. Funds are raised by requesting sponsorship from family and friends via the dedicated YMCA Swimathon website – www.ymcaswimathon.org.au. “At the YMCA, we’re committed to providing opportunities for everyone to live healthier, happier lifestyles,” said Leisa Hart, Chief Executive Officer, YMCA NSW. “We know that one in five primary school children leave school without being able to swim the length of an Olympic Swimming Pool[i], however we know the rate amongst people with disabilities would be higher. “People with disabilities often require specially-qualified instructors or accessible facilities. But more often than not, there are not enough qualified swimming instructors or available equipment to easily access the water. Through the YMCA Swimathon we hope to change this but need the help of all Australians to get behind this worthy cause. “Last year the event raised $230,000 nationally across 55 YMCA-managed pools. This year the target is set at $250,000, which will fund at least 1600 children and adults with disabilities to have meaningful opportunities to enjoy being in the water. Twenty-five pools across NSW will be taking part this year. All the money raised stays in the local community to support local initiatives,” Ms Hart said. “You don’t even have to swim to take part. You can walk up and down the pool for an hour if you like. If you’re up for a challenge, you can set yourself a goal and see how far you can swim between. It’s always a fantastic day out for the whole family.” To register for the YMCA Swimathon or to find out more go to ymcaswimathon.org.au.
